About the artist
As a life-long resident of Independence, I developed a passion for art at a young age. Both my travels abroad and a fine arts degree enriched my understanding of painting styles, techniques and methodology. One strand consistent throughout my artistic career has been to use line, color and form to capture the “essence of the moment.”
In the initial stages of painting I use large brushes to sketch the subject matter on canvas. The use of expressive brushwork throughout the painting process creates a spontaneous approach that “celebrates” the use of paint as a medium. A full palette of color is applied in sweeping strokes to enhance the subject matter as well as give the illusion of movement, balance and form. My goal is that all techniques work in tandem, therefore inviting the viewer to stop and look closely. John Singer Sargent (American Impressionist, 1856-1925) has influenced my recent development due to his broad, painterly style and ability to capture an “elusive moment” on canvas.
Some of my past work has been featured in the United States postal calendars, the Postal Life Magazine, and displayed at the United States Post Office Headquarters in Washington. I am currently studying at the Kansas City Art Institute under the instruction of Chun Wang, professional designer and artist.
